As stars are far away from the earth they appear to be twinkleing. this is due to the large area of Earth's atmosphere Wich include dust particle water molecules and air molecules, this leads to atmospheric refraction.

The different particles in the atmosphere disperse the beam of light coming from the star. since the atmosphere has varying densities the apparent position of the object as seen through the hot air fluctuates. this wavering of light ia an effect of atmospheric refraction.

the twinkling of a star is due to the atmospheric refraction of star light. it occurs in a medium of gradually changing refractive index.
