Stars twinkle due to atmospheric refraction, that might sound okay, but did you ever think why?
Let me explain:
Stars are far away from us, some even millions of light years away, yes!.
So the light has to travel long distances, go through multiple refraction, interference and what not? Even when it crosses the atmospheric barrier or blanket, Ka-Boom!! earth by no means forgives the light or you may call it electromagnetic radiation, it gets refracted along the path left until it reaches your eyes. Now imagine, thousands of refraction and you see an illusion of stars twinkling and by God's grace, you're impressed.
By this time I suppose you already know what refraction is, don't you?
