why do students not want to call the British rule in India a modern period

Indian historians not want to call the British rule in India a modern period because the British treated India as a colony. they took away raw materials from India and make her an imported of finished British goods. so British rule can hardly be described as modern .it was colonial. Indian historians call it as a colonial period.
