Substances undergo two types of changes.

A change in their composition to form a new substance is known as chemical change whereas a change in only their physical state is called physical change.

Physical changes occur in substances owing to the changes in the intermolecular bonds.

For example a solid has rigid structure owing to close intermolecular space but when temperature or pressure works on it, the intermolecular attraction can decrease, letting molecules flow freely and the substance changing to liquid.
