The simplest thermometers really are simple! They're just very thin glass tubes filled with a small amount of silvery liquid (typically mercury—a rather special metal that's a liquidat ordinary, everyday temperatures). When mercury gets hotter, it expands (increases in size) by an amount that's directly related to the temperature. So if the temperature increases by 20 degrees, the mercury expands and moves up the scale by twice as much as if the temperature increase is only 10 degrees. All we have to do is mark a scale on the glass and we can easily figure out the temperature.

Answer: The type of thermometer being used affects the temperature scale because various thermometers operate according to various physical principles and have various measurement characteristics. For instance, while a thermocouple measures temperature based on the voltage produced by the junction of two dissimilar metals when exposed to a temperature gradient, a mercury thermometer measures temperature based on the expansion of mercury caused by heat.

Explanation:

  • Even when measuring the same physical quantity, the scales of various thermometers do not always match up because of these variations (temperature). It is necessary to specify a set of reference points and a reliable measurement system that can be used to calibrate various thermometer types in order to create a standard temperature scale.
  • A reading of 40 degrees on one type of thermometer will be equivalent to a reading of 40 degrees on another type of thermometer because different thermometer scales are typically calibrated to correspond to the standard temperature scale. Even though they are measuring the same temperature, minute differences in the calibration of various thermometers can cause small differences in temperature readings.
