The bulb will not glow because the terminals are on the same side. The terminals are always connected in opposite order.

See the attachment

Example: (+ve) ---- (–ve) ---- (+ve) ---- (–ve)

When connected in opposite order, current can flow from positive terminal to negative terminal and makes the circuit continuous.

Following are some other factors on which the glowing of bulb depends

  • Good conductor
  • The wire should not be fused
  • The circuit should be in correct order
  • The potential difference provided by a cell or battery should have the capacity to glow the bulb
