The colonies were felt necessary by the French to supply natural resources and other essential goods.
They believed that through colonies, the "benefits of civilization" can be bought to backward peoples.
They began the process of colonization by "building canals" and "draining lands" in the delta region of Mekong.
As a result of such type of colonization, the rice production was increased and the country became one of the most leading exporters of rice. In order to make the country more facilitate, transportation and military forces were also established.
