has very less water holding capacity. Thus , the water passes quickly through the spaces between and makes the soil dry up.
On the other hand has a very good capacity of holding water i.e. water retention capacity is more in clayey soil . So , the soil doesn't dry up soon.
Hence , with respect to the above statements we come to know that the water retention capacity is responsible for frequent irrigation for sandy soil than clayey soil.
Properties of Sandy soil :
- dry
- lacks nutrients
- less water retention capacity
Properties of Clayey soil :
- contains organic matter called humus.
- rich in nutrients
- high water retention capacity

The crops grown in sandy soil need frequent irrigation because the soil dries quickly and thus does not retain water for long so it needs to be watered more whereas clayey soil is watery and retains water for longer time, so, it does not require frequent irrigation.
