Heart of Darkness is a English novel by novelist Joseph Conrad regarding a Spoken Voyage on the Congo River in the heart of Africa.

Charles Marlow the narrator tells his story to friends sitting on a boat anchored on the London Thames.

This gives the frame for Marlow's tale of obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz which provides Conrad to make a uniform between what he calls "the greatest town on earth" and London and Africa as Heart of Darkness .

Conrad's writing provides the thought that less separation is there between civilised people and those described as slaves where Heart of Darkness portrays imperialism and racism.

Issued as a 3-section serial story in Blackwood's News Magazine to enjoy the 1000th edition of the magazine.

The dense forest of the DRC is called the heart of darkness because it has dense vegetation for people to travel. It is in reference to the story by Joseph Conrad regarding the voyage through the Congo River by Charles Marlow. He refers to Africa as the place of darkness drawing a parallel with the great town on earth which is London.

Explanation:

  • It is a story that Charles Marlow has been telling friends about the boat which has been anchored in River Thames and moving through the Congo River.
  • The Congo River plays an important role and is an effective way of moving the people around Congo.
  • The vegetation on the edges of the river is very dense for faster travel but the river helps with the movement and also helps with the flow of the story.
