why do the electrostatic field lines not form closed loops ?

The field lines start (or diverge) from the positive charges and terminate (or converge) on negative charges. If the electric field lines form closed loops, these lines must originate and terminate on the same charge which is not possible.

Electric field lines start from positive charge and end at infinity. Therefore, these lines do not form close loop.
