Why do the following occur ? (1) To the west of Sahyadris, laterite soils are formed from basalt rock. (2) Humus content in the soil increases. (3) Soil formation process is faster in the equatorial climate. (4) The salinity of the soil increases. (5) Rice is the staple diet of the people from Konkan. (6) Soil erosion (7) Soil degradation.

All these factors occur due to the presence of Western Ghats, dry and wet season, heavy rainfall, and also it is near to the coastal region, the "laterite soil" is seen in the west side of Sahyadris.

This soil becomes muddy when it receives rain and becomes like clay when it is dry.

Also, the heavy rains removes the fertility of the soil, due to which salinity increases and rice crop is not suitable to grow.
