Why do the Jordans take a long time to get to the house of the slaters? What does it shows about the two sisters attitude towards each other?

The Jordan's came late bcos it had taken them to buy new mourning cloths and came dressed up in them before reaching the slaters residence.
This shows that the both the sister's were selfishly competitive and were always trying to get the better of each other.
