Because of heavy load, less number of tyres may burst as the weight is distributed amongst them all. So, if they have more tyres, they can carry huge weights easily.

A four wheel truck with a gross weight of 16,000 lbs will have the weight distributed roughly 4,000 lbs per tire. Make that an 18 wheeler and each tire only has to carry about 889 lbs.

Why does that matter? Well, often because the load limit isn’t the vehicle, but the roads themselves.

In addition, the more weight you put on a single wheel, typically that requires a larger wheel and, in addition, a stronger attachment for the wheel.
