alveoli are the balloon like structure present in the lungs... they play an important role in exchange of gases.. they become larger for efficient gaseous exchange..

alveoli of lungs are used for exchange of gases .They are consist of small capillaries and blood from capillaries contain himoglobin which has capacity to hold oxygen and co2 in different forms to exchange with cell. During inspiration oxygen and during expiration co2 is exchanged.
