Why do the particles of potassium permanganate or any other substance separate from each other when put in water ?

See... the particles of potassium permanganate or any other salt which is soluble in water actually does not separate from each other but undergoes the process of diffusion.

As you would be knowing that diffusion is the process of movement of particles from their higher concentration to the region of their lower concentration, and when potassium permanganate is put in water... it is soluble in water and therefore, the molecules of potassium permanganate start to move away from the Crystal, that is, from the high concentration to the lower concentration throughout the content of water.

This experiment is widely used to observe the convection current in water when be slightly heat beaker containing potassium permanganate crystal in water.
