during sunrise and sunset the sun is at the farthest position there, blue light gets scattered off and the red light due to its larger wavelength can travel longer distance and hence reach our eyes . that is why sun appear red.

Answer:

During the sunrise the light from the sun has to travel the longest distance of atmosphere to reach the observer. The light travelling from sun loses blue light of short wavelength due to scattering, while the red light of long wavelength is scattered a little. So, it is not lost much. Thus blue light is almost absent in sunlight reaching the observer and only red light reaches us. So the sun is seen red.
