the most famous Mauryan ruler was askoka . he was the first ruler who tried to take his message to the people through inscriptions . most of them were in Prakrit language and were written in brahmin scripts.

kalinga is the ancient name of costal Orissa . Ashoka fought the war to conquer kalinga . however he was horrified when he saw the violence and the blood shed that he decided not to fight any more wars . he is the only king in the world history who gave up conquest after winning a war.
