why do think number of organisms decrease as we move from producers to different level of foodchains

It os because the amount of energy becomes less as we move from producer to consumers and further on. According to 10 % law - only 10 % of energy is available to the next eater which goes on decreasing so a food chain has only 3-4 levels.
