Why do toads bury themselves in the mud?

Spring peepers, wood frogs, greenfrogs and others bury themselves in the mud around a wetland, such as a pond or stream.

Aquatic frogs can't do this, and therefore cannot breathe under the mud. These frogs usually hibernate only half buried in the mud.
