The smaller the area, larger the pressure on a surface for the same force. This is why tools meant for cutting and piercing always have sharp edges. By increasing the area we can also reduce the pressure on a surface for the same applied force

if you cut with sharp blade and a blunt ,using the same force with each the sharp blade has a much smaller surface area than the blunt blade .this results in the sharp blade translating that force in to more pressure at the cutting surface, and therefore an easier out
