why do tooth ache when there is a hole in them

It ache due penetration of bacteria from top most layer which is enamel to pulp.Pulp is a living tissue unlike dentine and enamel that covers pulp in a normal tooth so when ever bacteria reach pulp through in dentine and enamel tooth ache starts.
