why do transition elements show variable Oxidation State

Anonymous: They have partially filled d orbitals
Anonymous: thus at the excitation , the electrons get unpaired and shift into the d orbital
Anonymous: but zinc has full filled d orbital that is d10 thus is not a transition element
gautam823: thanks

Transition elements can have different oxidation states. Most of the elements show variable oxidation states. The reason being when transition metals form compounds, the electrons present in ns and (n-1)d orbitals can participate in bonding due to almost similar energies.

Answer:

because the valence electrons have similar energies so that's why 1,2 so on can take part in bonding depending on circumstances
