plants lose their leaves to conserve water or to better survive winter weather conditions, they must regrow new foliage during the next suitable growing season; this uses resources which evergreens do not need to expend.

Answer: lose of water

Explanation:

If the leaves were retained by the the plant ,the plant will lose a lot of water in winter through the process called transpiration which will lead to the death of the plant.
