He stood there on one leg with the other leg hidden under his wing. He closed his one eye, then the other, and pretended to be falling asleep. He did so because he wanted to know whether they were interested in him or not but he observed that his family was not noticing him

The seagull pretended to be asleep with an intention that his family may show some sympathy to him and may provide him some food. He observed that his drama has no effect on his family but they were enjoying their flight practice

to receive his mother's attention, the young Seagull pretended that he is falling asleep. ... He wanted his family to avoid his practice of flying and so he pretended that he was falling asleep. His mother, on the other hand, kept on encouraging him.
