The triploid primary endosperm nucleus divides to form large nutritive endosperm which serves as the source of nutrition for developing an embryo. To ensure the presence of nutritive endosperm, zygote remains dormant for some time.

The Zygote remains dormant in a fertilised ovule because it takes time for the formation of nutritive endosperm from the primary endosperm cell. The nutritive endosperm formed by the division of the triploid primary endosperm cell serves as food and source of nutrition for the development of the Zygote. Therefore, the Zygote needs to stay dormant until the the nutritive endosperm gets formed otherwise it'll not be able to survive and grow.
