why do vegetables cook faster when they are chopped

When anything is cut into smaller pieces it takes less time to cook because there is more surface area for the heat to reach for example if you have a steak in one piece it will take longer than slicing the steak and cooking it that way because the heat can reach the center of the item quicker and it will be cooked
