why do volcanoes stop erupting

I can only guess that there is either a cooling event, the magma erupting is from a limited source or the channels for magma flow become clogged up.

Volcanoes only erupt when there is enough hot magma that is more than the capacity of the volcano.Otherwise volcanoes do not erupt regularly coz there is not enough hot magma inside it .
