why do water pipes burst open in winters

Water pipes burst because the water inside them expands is it gets close to freezing, and this causes an increase in pressure inside the pipe. When the pressure gets too high for the pipe to contain, it ruptures.

during winters cold weather in the atmosphere makes the pipe shrink inwards
but the water makes it shrink in it own place without effecting its volume which causes it to burst
