why do water pipes usually crack in winter​

Explanation:

due to such a less temperature while the water inside the pipe continues to expand as it has the property of expanding at lower temperature like below 40C. Thus, the freezing water exerts pressure on the pipe from inside and hence the cracks in water pipes are observed.
