Baking powder is sodium hydrogen carbonate mixed with some edible acid, say tartaric acid.
When it is heated it gives off carbon dioxie. And this carbon dioxide makes the cake/bread fluffy.
Therefore the cake becomes spongy and soft (as there is carbon dioxide in it) .

Hii There!!
We add baking powder in cakes because, it is chemical leavening agents that cause batters to rise when baked.
The chemical reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, inflating cookies and cakes etc.
