Answer: To prevent them from being oxidized.

Explanation: Iron on being exposed to atmosphere starts losing electrons and thus start getting oxidized and oxygen present in the atmosphere start gaining those electrons leading to formation of rust.

Thus in order to prevent the contact of iron with atmosphere so as to prevent it from getting oxidized so that rust formation is avoided.

Oxidation: Fe\rightarrow Fe^{2+}+2e^-

Reduction: O_2+2H_2O+4e^-\rightarrow 4OH^-
