When oil is applied over an iron part, it creates a waterproof coating over the part. Water and humidity therefore do not come in contact with the iron part and as a result, it stays without rusting. Rust is caused by oxidation of iron-based metals and alloys, when it comes in contact with water or humidity.
Hence, iron tools kept in storage are generally oiled.
