why do we call Ashoka the Great emperor of ancient India ? list some important welfare taken by him.

After ascending the throne Ashoka fought the great Kalinga war. According to a great historian (Megasthenes) the ruler of kalinga had a very powerful army,at last ashoka won the war and thus he came to be known as a great ruler.
SOME IMPORTANT WELFARE TAKEN BY HIM ARE AS FOLLOWS:
1)He abandoned the policy of "conquest by force"and embraced the policy of religion.
2)He declared Buddhism as the state religion.
3)The people of his kingdom were happy with the steps take by ashoka,and thus it made his kingdom a prosperous one.
