In normal air we breathe, the oxygen atoms forms a pair with its own atom to gain stability, so there will be two oxygen atoms. Thus, we have to take its symbol as O because it is oxygen symbol. And as there are two atoms, so there will be 2 in the lower right bottom of the symbol O. the final symbol will be O2.
