Why do we called water as hydrogen dioxide?

H20 is actually called Dihydrogen Monoxide (water), not Hydrogen Dioxide. HO2 would be Hydrogen Dioxide. ... H2O. 2 Hydrogen, 1 Oxygen. But it's not called that - it's called dihydrogen oxide, because calling ithydrogen dioxide would mean that it has 2 oxygen atoms, but it doesn't.
