Why do we can't measure the temperature near fire and in sunlight with a clinical thermometer?

A clinical thermometer is designed to measure only human body temperature which varies over a short range.

We cannot do so because the thermometer contains mercury to measure the temperature and mercury has a smaller scale for measuring.

The temperature of fire is higher than that can be shown in the clinical temperature.
