Every year I used to visit home a day or two before Diwali because of college but thanks to Corona, this year I got to experience the full fledged Diwali cleaning and guess the most prominent question in my mind- Why do we do this cleaning? What is the logic behind this?
It is always believed that Diwali is the time when goddess Lakshmi steps into our house bringing wealth, peace & prosperity. So to make Lakshmi puja more effective we clean and decorate the house because, “Cleanliness is next to godliness”. It is believed that there is a lot of positive energy that will grace the house, which is clean, well lit and adorned as per our interests and beliefs.
Diwali is one occasion when people pay visit to each other’s house. India is a country where we respect our guest more than anyone else, “ATITHI DEVO BHAVA”. It is considered a good symbol to welcome guest in a spick and span house.
As per Hindu calendar Diwali is the beginning of new year, we all want to welcome the inception of anything new with a clean slate. Similarly it goes for this new year, we all look forward for clean house and happy space. Cleaning brings commencement of freshness and new environment.
Once a year comes this occasion when we should remove all the unwanted items from the house. Idle things, lying in any space bring dust and attract negative energy. Also, it is always a good to donate items in good condition to the needy.
Since Diwali is celebrated somewhere between mid-October to mid-November, right after monsoons end, the cleaning makes sure all the germs and infestation that monsoons brought with them get eradicated with the cleaning activities.
Make sure you clean your sibling's room yourself. You will definitely find something worth blackmailing them till next Diwali xD. If not anything worth blackmailing, you'll definitely find their hidden chocolates :P
Festivals are the time of indulgence. Apart from cleaning your house, make sure you take good care of yourself, your body and health. Free yourself from all the bad vibes, give yourself a home spa, hug your family tight enough to squeeze out all the negativity, leave the past behind and embrace the future with a big smile.
