Answer: The original circuit is reduced to an equivalent resistance and a voltage sorce.That is less than the smallest of the individual resistances..

- Connect in parallel if you want a resistor group with a higher power rating but lower resistance than any of the original resistors ( e.g. 10 x 510 ohm 1W resistors in parallel will have a resistance of 51 ohms, 10W.)
- Connect in series if you want a higher resistance with the same current carrying capacity as the lowest power resistor in the string. ( 2 x 51 ohm 1W resistors in series will have a resistance of 102 ohms, 1W capacity).
