Following are the main causes of depletion of groundwater:
Pumping water out is often done at a faster rate than its replenishment.

Removal of vegetation cover from the soil which leads to reduction in percolation of water thus affecting recharge of groundwater.

Pollution of groundwater, such leaching of agrochemicals like pesticides, has affected the quality of groundwater.
