The air gets heated by convection. Therefore, the hand above the flame feels hot. On the sides, however, there is no convection and air does not feel as hot as at the top.

We feel more heat when we keep one hand above the candle flame, because -
- We know that, heat travels in the air by the convection process.
- In this case, the heat energy which is generated from the candle flame, is getting convected into the air in the upward only direction and convection in the sideways is very minimum.
- Due, to this upward traveling heat energy, we feel more heat when we keep our hands on the top of the candle.
