We feel more heat when we keep one hand above the candle flame because the air which gets heated up due to the candle flame expands and moves upwards, that's why we feel more heat.

While when we keep our hand on the side of the candle flame we don't feel much heat because the air at that place isn't very hot.

The hand above the flame gets more heat due to convection. On the sides, there is no convection and so air does not feel as hot as at the top.
