There is a school of thought that says humans will adapt to any changes in circumstance that befall them. Win the lottery and, when the novelty has worn off, you’re likely to be just as grumpy and unhappy as you were before. Or if you have an accident that means your physical state is impaired, after a while you’ll get used to it and it will cease to have an impact on your state of mind.

It’s called adaptation, and it’s connected with the idea that we all have a set point of happiness or unhappiness that we tend to revert to after the first flush of change has died down.
