Why do we have a system where representatives are elected for a fixed period and not for life?

So that everyone gets a chance to be elected. If the people are fixed permanently, other people wouldn't get a chance to get elected. Plus the citizens can also be dissatisfied if the same leaders rule forever and they would need a change.
