The day is not exactly of 24 hours, and therefore it affects the total duration of months and hence years. An year is not exactly 365 days, but it is 365 days and 6 hours; so instead of extending every single year it was decided to add one complete day every 4th year i.e. 6 into 4 which means we accumulate the 6 hours for 4 years and then integrate them into a single day which leads to occurance of a leap year every 4 years.
