It is so because the speed of light is much more faster than speed of sound which is 343 m/s while the speed of light is 3×10^8 m/s .Thus we see lighting first then the thundering of clouds.

Lightning is seen earlier and thunder is heard later because light travel faster ( I. e-book 3,00,000 km/sec) than sound (speed - 340 km/sec)
