Its actually due to the aroma of food separating due to kinetic energy.
Even though when we are in kitchen we can smell the food because when food is heat the aroma of food can be smelled even from a long distance due to heat the kinetic energy in air particles increase and though they keep on moving and separate the aroma of food in the air and that is why we can smell the food even if we are not in the kitchen .
