A Constitution can be a single document or a set of documents. It can be written or unwritten. However, it is very important fir a State to have its Constitution as its absence will lead to chaos and anarchy.
One of the most important functions of a modern Democratic Constitution is to put proper checks and balances on Governmental Powers and ensure that the Government of the day doesn't interfere with the normal life of a Citizen; unless one commit or prepare to commit an illegal act. It also ensures that the Government doesn't act arbitrarily on key matters concerning the Citizens.
