What is the purpose of government?

Original Question: What would you say is the point of having a government?

Sometimes I do wonder!

In a democracy, it’s to give a centralised representation of the views and opinions of the majority of people in a country, on a wide range of topics, when it comes to how they might affect the country as a whole, either nationally or internationally.

The same also applies on a local basis, where the views and opinions of people living in a defined geographical region can be reflected in how local services in the region, are provided.

At least, in theory.

In practice of course, and certainly in countries which have incomplete democratic representation, such as here in the UK with its very unfair (perhaps subjectively so) ‘first past the post’ voting system, the resultant government and the policies it enacts might not actually be representative of the majority, just of the majority who voted. And thinking about it, not even then, since supporters of any given political party will always have a wide range of views and opinions within the particular political spectrum, and since we can’t vote for different political parties to represent us on different matters, we have to pick one or another.
