Why do we need a representative? Why can't people join directly in decision making?

Explanation:
Before the internet, there was no way for everyone to gather around, and vote on a bill, so we would have representatives do it for us.
Today, we could just vote online. Why hasn't this happened yet? I've read an article that basically points out the drawbacks of voting on the internet
1) minorities would be ignored
2) we wouldn't have the time to go through each bill, and decide if it's good for us
3) there are too many bills for us to go through and vote on, pay someone to do it full time
4) "Our opinions can change rapidly, " meaning that we are like children, and we need adults to decide what's best for us
5) There are inconsistencies in what we want, and again, we need adults to make the tough decisions
6) We wouldn't be able to decide what we vote on
7) A kitten would become president, and a Bieber song would become the national anthem
8) The general population would be influenced heavily by large corporations that would control us through advertisements
Alright so, for the people that don't want to vote on every bill, they can defer their vote to anyone of their choosing. So they can vote on their behalf. This would solve most of the aforementioned issues.
But I sense that people don't have a lot of faith in each other. It appears that the primary concern is that, if everyone got to vote on everything, we would make bad decisions. And so, like children that need adult supervision, we elect adults to take care of us. Does that sum it up?
It is for this reason that we need a representative.
Elected representatives are elected by the people in a country, city, or other geographical unit to represent them in a legislature or government. They make laws, interact with constituents, and participate in debates and interviews to explain and promote their positions.
