Standard time and time zones are necessary for long distance communication and commerce. It is needed because, throughout human history, people have apparently marked the moment when the sun is at its zenith as the midpoint of the day, and measured backward and forward from there — “Noon” in English. Standard Time is the system that approximately equates Noon with the sun’s zenith, the “approximate” being caused by the practical need for a set time across a given space of the earth’s surface, rather than a slightly different time at each degree of longitude.
